Costs rising for province's assistance program

The Saskatchewan Party government is facing a growing tab as flooded residents make claims under a disaster assistance program, but it's too soon to estimate the overall cost, says Public Safety Minister Yogi Huyghebaert.

The province will also be looking to the federal government to help pay the flood bill, the minister said.

More than 70 communities have applied for assistance from the Provincial Disaster Assistance Program because of damages caused by heavy rain, including Saskatoon, Maple Creek and Yorkton.

Huyghebaert said only a small, base amount of money is budgeted in the program each year because there's no way to predict whether a natural disaster will strike. But additional funds will be found to pay the eligible claims that are made in the coming weeks and months, the minister said.
